Employee Motivation: The Chocolate Story
This is actually true, and not an urban myth, as witnessed by employees of an unnamed company. A scheme was put into place to recognise people’s efforts more often. One of the rewards was chocolate. I’m not sure what kind, probably some kind of a fancy box. Anyway, over time, the managers in a particular department obviously didn’t think their employees deserved the chocolate or they forgot about it (much the same thing, I’d imagine, from an employees perspective). When it was noticed that the chocolate had reached its “sell-by” date, what do you think the managers did? Of course, they did. Like any good manager, they threw the lot out. So, not only did they fail to use the rewards at their disposal, but then they rubbed their employees faces in it (not literally, of course, because then the naughty employees might have licked it off). Not surprisingly, the Chocolate Story became a symbol of the poor engagement in this workplace. I would imagine that plenty of people out there have a “Chocolate Story” of their own….. |
