Developing Work Relationships

Recently I’ve been asked to comment on work matters, and both issues (“getting on at work” and “how to get what you want from your boss”) can largely be boiled down to the quality of relationships that you hold.

So, I was asked. What specific tips can you give on building that relationship? Some people, after all, like to be told exactly how to do something. Others are more inclined to follow general principles and work it out from there.

I’m not big on things like body language, and tend to believe that you have to match your strategies to the context (which of course includes the other person), so I tend to give more general principles myself.

I’m not especially an expert on relationships – in that there are people who spend their entire professional lives dealing with them – but I do believe that you reap what you sow. Therefore, I would suggest the following principles. I don’t expect that they are complete, so please add more with comments.

* Provide time, support, humour, kindness and warmth but don’t expect immediate payback (so you can add patience into that list).

* Show appreciation when other people give their time, support, humour, kindness and warmth to you. Nothing reaches out like a “thank you”.

* People will, at times, be impatient, ill-tempered or cranky. Don’t react, but give them the time and space to get their frustration out.

* People will also make mistakes. Don’t judge them for it, and don’t remind them about it in public.

* Congratulate and praise others when it is due. Be careful not to give it too loosely though, or you may appear insincere.

Finally, because I couldn’t put it any better, a quote: “Seek first to understand, then to be understood” (Stephen Covey, from The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People*).
